Process Unveiled

A mini-course on Collage/Mixed Media

Why this course?

Artists are always curious to see other artists' creative process but many keep it hidden behind the "curtains" of their studios. Marija and I have decided to invite you in and share my journey, my thoughts, the struggles and the resolutions.

This mini-course is a place where intuition and intellect come together. My 50+ years of making art feeds my intuition but my 30+ years of teaching provides the understanding of concepts and the language to describe them.

This course is different than our previous ones. Instead of elaborate lectures and exercises, we offer an inspirational insight into my creative process. It is a mini-course after all.

If you are interested in the deeper learning and understanding of the concepts of color and design, we strongly suggest considering our two signature courses, each an equivalent to a college semester of learning: The  Language of Color and The Language of Design.

In this mini-course:

  • I will reveal my step-by-step creative and thinking process while creating three pieces of artwork.

  • Marija and I will have a conversation about each piece being created in front of your very eyes as well as Q&A sessions to answer your questions.

  • Relax and enjoy a journey into the (art)history of collage.

  • Become enriched, inspired and ready to expand the way you work!

Let me start by saying that this has been an absolutely wonderful journey through your demonstrations and fabulous historical slideshow. I feel so inspired and have ended this series of videos with a list of many projects and ideas for what I want to create and what I want to play with. For years, I have worked with layers of cloth and papers and never thought of myself as a collage artist. After this fabulous mini course, I am so inspired to dive deeper into playing with collage, and owning my inner collage artist. Thank you for creating this offer. So well done. And I would like to encourage you to create more mini courses.

Thank you so much Mark and Marija again for an inspiring and content filled mini course. I can hardly wait for the Abstract course in the future! As always, your inclusion of art history is such an important supplement in the process of making our own art (I guess that's why I was a double major in studio art and art history way back when). I have taken several online art courses during the pandemic and post pandemic in continuing my art education, but your model is so superior to the subscription models which are usually only available for a brief time. I know that I'm not the only one who appreciates lifetime access to the material, and being able to pay up front without getting into a typical subscription situation. Thank you both again for your time, passion, and commitment. Wendy Ketchum

Your 'mini' course has been wonderful for me, to see your techniques - adhering the pieces (I have only used a glue stick which is okay but does not always leave a piece looking finished). The course is highly suitable for someone who is already an art maker like myself or for any beginner who has never made a collage piece. It is very cohesive, comprehensive and enjoyable! Mark, I also love quotes! The dialogue between the two of you enriches this course -the questions you pose and answer. So thank you so much! I knew after finding you, that this would be a good course. I also share in your likes of certain artists but you have also exposed me to many who I was not familiar with. So thank you again and I shall stay tuned in to your academy, your social media and future courses!

I enjoyed every minute of this course which is filled with tips on materials, techniques and process. Mark’s demos are engaging as he shares each stage of decision making including ways to begin, embracing the element of surprise and working through challenges along the way to an original and strong finish. Both Mark and Marija effectively explain the how and the why with artistic knowledge and an obvious love for teaching. The extensive history of collage module was a nice bonus. I feel very inspired and look forward to future courses with you both.
